Back to School

It’s that time of year. The weather is getting a touch cooler, the days are getting shorter, and the school year is just about to begin. Your children are not the only ones in for a big change; your pets will also be subject to a big change.

Back To School

The back to school blues can affect your pets just as much as they affect your kids. Our furry kids have spent every day of the last three months playing with their favorite humans. Now, they have to spend the day without them. Dogs and cats can go through a separation anxiety of sorts when the schedule changes so abruptly. They may become depressed, have accidents in the house, not eat as well, or become destructive. When they are faced with days without anything to do they may panic and revert to some misbehaving. There are some easy solutions to this problem. Try giving your pet a favorite toy when the kids leave as a special treat, leave a radio or TV on for some an additional diversion, or confine them to a comfortable room or crate. They will adjust back to the school schedule; they just might need a little extra TLC.

Another issue to be aware of is their safety. When kids run out the door the pets may try to run out with them thinking play time is on. Unfortunately, they may not be paying attention and could get hit by a car or bus or even try to run after the bus and get lost. Remind children to not let pets outside when they leave or to be aware of where they are. As Ben Franklin says, “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.”

There are some extra options to consider keeping your pet occupied. Our area has several doggy day cares that are available as well as hiring a dog walker to come spend time with your pooch. Spend extra time in the morning playing with them or take a long walk. Work on teaching new tricks or commands. Lastly, try changing up your leaving routine. Pets watch you very closely and know every move you make as you get ready to leave, just alter the order or timing and they may not become anxious about the impending departure. There is a lot of activity in the morning, don’t forget to get your pet ready for the day too.

Have a great school year, stay safe, and study hard!
